Top Three Grooming Tools
The hardest part about grooming a Leonberger is being consistent. If you can integrate a brushing session 2-3x into your weekly routine, you have already won half the battle. When it comes to grooming, “A little goes a long way” when it comes to consistency. And for those of us who need a helping hand (raising my hand), we have definitely benefited from taking our Leos, on occasion, to the groomers…the expertise and skill they can bring truly make our at-home grooming experience so much more manageable and enjoyable. While we have accumulated many grooming tools over the years, we wanted to simply list our top three favorites!
Slicker Brush- This is by far the most frequently used brush we use. It serves us whether they are blowing their undercoats, or whether it is simply tackling those year-round, sneak-up-on-you matted areas (behind the ears and under the armpits!). It is also a great finishing touch brush!
Metal Comb- This comb is also great at removing undercoat!
Undercoat Rake- When they are blowing their undercoat, there is nothing more enjoyable than a satisfying run through with this rake.
Grooming is not a favorite topic of mine. I'd rather be hiking with my Leonbergers or chilling with them while watching Netflix. If you stay on top of the brushing, it stays a small part of life, and in my ideal world, that is where I want to keep it. But if life gets away from you, or you can’t find your grooming tools, or maybe your grooming tool, unbeknownst to you, became a chew toy, know these things are all totally normal. And maybe you find you want to delegate that responsibility to someone else. Or, on the other hand, you find that brushing your Leonberger is a special bonding time with them. I know these people exist. I am not one of them. Choose what matters to you.
