Once Upon a Time
I remember the moment. Perched on our wooden barstool, my mother was cutting my hair. It seemed like the moment had finally arrived. For months I had been planning. I can still retrace my eight-year-old footsteps as I climbed the library staircase, heading to the non-fiction section. Every library visit, coming away with dog breed books, and how-to’s of dog husbandry. I even started diary entries, writing to my future puppy, as one does in a baby book. With every persuasive tool I possessed, I began delicately painting a picture of the Leonberger. I do not think I have or will ever try to sell a Leonberger to anyone as hard as I tried to sell that one to my mother. As the conversation still seemed agreeable, I took courage and shared the best piece, the piece I had been saving for last. “They have the strength of a lion and the gentleness of a lamb.” The hair-cutting stopped, as did the conversation, and one can assume that the “lion” and “strength” part were the only words apparently heard.
While I never experienced this Leonberger dream as a child, as an adult I have the privilege of sharing this dream with my own children and husband. If I could go back to that hair-cutting moment in time, having experienced life with Leonbergers, I would have, instead, shared this. “The beauty of a lion and the gentleness of a lamb".
Truth, goodness and beauty awaits all those who are ready to step into the enchanting world of Leonbergers. And it is our dream to be apart of that journey, hand in hand.
